IGI Certified Lab Grown Diamonds: How to Read Your Certificate

An IGI certified lab grown diamond comes with an independent grading report from the International Gemological Institute that records the stone's shape, measurements, carat weight, colour, clarity, cut, fluorescence and its laboratory grown origin. Reading it takes only a few minutes once you know where to look: start with the report number, verify it on the IGI website, then check that each grade matches what you were promised.

What is IGI?

The International Gemological Institute is an independent gemmological laboratory that grades diamonds for the jewellery trade. It is one of the most widely used labs for lab grown diamonds, alongside others such as GIA. IGI does not sell diamonds. Its role is to examine a stone with specialised equipment and describe it in a standard, consistent language.

Why an independent lab grown diamond certificate matters

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds: the same carbon crystal, with the same hardness and optical properties as mined diamonds. A jeweller's loupe cannot tell the two apart, and only specialised laboratory equipment can confirm a stone's origin.

Because the eye alone cannot tell you what you are holding, a lab grown diamond certificate does several jobs at once:

  • It confirms the stone is a diamond and states clearly that it is laboratory grown.
  • It gives you a reference for insurance, resizing, resetting or a future exchange.

At Vucceli, every centre stone of 0.5 carat and above comes with an IGI certificate, so you never have to take a grade on trust.

How to read a diamond report, section by section

Report number and online verification

Every report carries a unique number, usually near the top. Enter it in the report verification tool on the IGI website and you should see the same details as on your printed or digital copy. If anything differs, ask your jeweller before going further. Some reports also note that the report number has been laser inscribed on the girdle, the thin outer edge of the stone. When that is mentioned, a jeweller can show it to you under magnification so you can match the stone to its paperwork.

Shape and cutting style

This line describes the outline and the facet arrangement, for example "round brilliant" for our round engagement rings, or oval and pear brilliant for the oval and pear designs.

Measurements

Measurements are given in millimetres. For a round stone you will see the minimum and maximum diameter and the depth; for other shapes, length by width by depth.

Carat weight

This is the weight measured by the lab, to two decimal places. Our centre sizes of 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 carats are approximate, so the report is where you find the exact weight of your own stone.

Colour grade

Colour is graded on a letter scale that begins at D, the most colourless. Vucceli centre stones are colour E, which sits firmly in the colourless range.

Clarity grade

Clarity describes the tiny internal features and surface marks visible under magnification. Our centre stones are VVS2, which stands for "very, very slightly included": any features are extremely difficult to find, even for a trained grader using a loupe.

Cut, polish and symmetry

For round brilliants, IGI gives an overall cut grade, and for every shape it grades polish and symmetry. Together these describe how carefully the stone has been finished and how well it returns light. Vucceli centre stones are excellent cut.

Fluorescence

Some diamonds glow softly under ultraviolet light. The report states the strength of that glow, starting from none. Ours show no fluorescence, so the stone looks the same in daylight, by candlelight or under ultraviolet lamps.

The "laboratory grown" statement and growth method

An IGI report for a lab grown diamond states its origin plainly, usually with the words "Laboratory Grown Diamond" in the title or description. When present, a note may also mention the growth process, CVD or HPHT, and whether the stone received any treatment after growth.

Comments and the plotted diagram

The comments section records anything that does not fit elsewhere, such as an inscription or a treatment note. Many reports also include a plotted diagram: a map of the stone seen from above and below, with small symbols marking its clarity characteristics.
