Are Lab Grown Diamonds Real? Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds Explained

Yes, lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are made of the same crystallised carbon as diamonds mined from the earth, with the same hardness, the same fire and the same brilliance. The question of lab grown vs natural diamonds is not about real versus fake. It is about origin: one formed deep underground over a very long time, the other was grown in a controlled laboratory.

Are lab grown diamonds real? What makes a diamond a diamond

A diamond is defined by what it is, not where it comes from. It is pure carbon arranged in a tight, regular crystal structure. That structure is what gives a diamond its exceptional hardness and its ability to bend and split light into flashes of white and colour.

Lab created diamonds share that exact structure. They are not coated, not imitations and not a "diamond-like" material. Chemically, physically and optically, they are diamonds. This is why you will also hear them called man made diamonds or cultured diamonds: the words describe the origin, not a different substance.

Lab grown vs natural diamonds: what is identical

  • Material: both are crystallised carbon with the same atomic structure.
  • Hardness: both are the hardest natural material known, which is why a diamond suits a ring worn every day.
  • Fire and brilliance: both handle light in the same way, so a well cut lab grown diamond shows the same life and sparkle as a well cut mined one.
  • Grading: both are assessed on the same 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity and carat) by independent laboratories such as IGI and GIA, using the same scales.

What is different: origin, growth and paperwork

How lab grown diamonds are made: CVD and HPHT

There are two main ways to grow a diamond, and both start with a small diamond "seed".

  • CVD (chemical vapour deposition): the seed is placed in a chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas. The gas is heated until carbon atoms separate and settle onto the seed, building the crystal layer by layer.
  • HPHT (high pressure, high temperature): the seed is surrounded by carbon and exposed to the intense pressure and heat found deep in the earth, recreating the conditions under which mined diamonds form.

CVD and HPHT diamonds are both real diamonds. The method affects the growing process, not what the finished stone is.

The grading report says "laboratory grown"

A grading report for a lab grown diamond clearly states that the stone is laboratory grown. The grades themselves, colour, clarity, cut and carat, follow the same standards as for any diamond.

Telling them apart takes a laboratory

A jeweller looking through a loupe cannot tell a lab grown diamond from a natural one. Identifying the origin requires specialised laboratory equipment that reads tiny differences in growth patterns and trace elements. To the eye, and on the hand, they are the same.

What lab grown diamonds are not: diamond simulants

Diamond simulants are stones that look like diamonds but are made of entirely different materials. The best known is cubic zirconia, and there are others, including glass and white sapphire.

Simulants are softer than diamond, handle light differently and are not graded by diamond laboratories. Over time they can scratch, cloud or lose their brightness. A lab grown diamond is none of these things. It is a diamond, and it behaves like one for a lifetime.

Lab grown, natural and simulant at a glance

Lab grown diamond Natural diamond Simulant (such as cubic zirconia)
Material Crystallised carbon Crystallised carbon A different material
Hardness Diamond hardness Diamond hardness Softer, scratches more easily
Graded by diamond labs Yes, on the 4Cs Yes, on the 4Cs No
Looks Diamond fire and brilliance Diamond fire and brilliance Similar at first, differs with time and light

How to decide between lab grown and natural

Since both are real diamonds, the choice is personal. A few gentle questions can help:

  • What matters most to you in the stone? If you want the look, durability and grading of a true diamond, a lab grown stone gives you all three.
  • How do you feel about origin? Some people value the idea of a stone formed in the earth; others prefer the traceable, controlled origin of a stone grown above ground.
  • Which size and quality do you want? Lab grown diamonds often let you choose a larger or higher grade centre stone for your budget.

Frequently asked questions

Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They are made of the same carbon crystal as mined diamonds and have the same hardness, fire and brilliance. Only their origin is different.

Is a lab grown diamond the same as cubic zirconia?

No. Cubic zirconia is a simulant, a different and softer material that only imitates a diamond. A lab grown diamond is a true diamond graded on the same 4Cs.
