The 4Cs of Lab Grown Diamonds, Explained Simply
The lab grown diamond 4Cs are the same four measures used to grade every diamond: cut, colour, clarity and carat. In short, cut decides how much a diamond sparkles, colour and clarity decide how white and clean it looks, and carat tells you its weight. If you remember only one thing, make it this: cut matters most.
Why the lab grown diamond 4Cs match natural diamonds
A lab grown diamond is a real diamond: the same carbon crystal, with the same hardness and the same way of handling light as a mined diamond. It is simply grown, by CVD or HPHT, rather than mined. Because the material is identical, laboratories such as IGI and GIA grade it on exactly the same 4Cs. The only difference on the report is that it states the stone is "laboratory grown".
Cut: the C that matters most for sparkle
Cut is not the shape of the stone. It describes how well the diamond's facets are angled, proportioned and polished. A well cut diamond catches light from above, bounces it around inside and sends it back to your eye as brightness and fire. Grades run from Excellent at the top, down through Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor.
What Vucceli chose: every centre stone is an excellent cut diamond. It is the one point we never compromise on, because a slightly larger or whiter diamond will never make up for lost light. You will find it in every shape, from our round engagement rings to our oval and pear designs.
Colour: understanding the D to Z diamond colour grade
Diamond colour is really about the absence of colour. The scale starts at D, completely colourless, and runs to Z, which shows a noticeable yellow or brown tint.
| Colour grade | What it means |
|---|---|
| D, E, F | Colourless |
| G, H, I, J | Near colourless |
| K, L, M | Faint tint |
| N to Z | Light to visible tint |
An E colour diamond sits in the colourless group, one step below D. The difference between D and E cannot be seen with the naked eye.
What Vucceli chose: E colour for every centre stone. It stays crisp and bright in all three of our golds, yellow, white and rose, and our accent stones are lab grown D or E too, so the whole ring reads as one even white.
Clarity: what VVS2 means, and why you will not see inclusions
Almost every diamond, grown or mined, carries tiny internal features called inclusions. Clarity grades how many there are, how large they are and where they sit, seen under 10x magnification. The scale runs from FL (flawless) and IF (internally flawless), through VVS1 and VVS2, VS1 and VS2, SI1 and SI2, down to I1, I2 and I3, where inclusions can often be seen without help.
A diamond clarity VVS2 grade means "very, very slightly included": any inclusions are so small that even an expert needs magnification and patience to find them. To the naked eye, a VVS2 diamond looks perfectly clean. Clarity only affects sparkle at the lower end of the scale, where larger inclusions can block light; at VVS2 there is nothing in the way.
What Vucceli chose: VVS2 clarity for every centre stone, with accent stones in the VVS to VS range. It is a calm, confident standard: clean to the eye and well beyond, without chasing a difference that only shows under a microscope.
Carat: weight, not size
Carat is a unit of weight, not of size: one carat equals one fifth of a gram, so carat size tells you how heavy a stone is rather than how wide it looks.
This is also why carat weight is always approximate when you choose a ring. Each diamond is cut for its best light, so a "1 carat" centre stone may weigh a touch more or less than exactly one carat. The certificate records the precise weight.
What Vucceli chose: centre stones of approximately 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 carats, each chosen for how it performs rather than to hit a number on a scale. Every centre stone of 0.5 carat and above comes with its IGI certificate. For another size, our custom-made lab grown diamond service is there for you.
A bonus fifth point: fluorescence
Fluorescence is not one of the 4Cs, but it appears on every certificate. Some diamonds glow, usually blue, under ultraviolet light. It is graded None, Faint, Medium, Strong or Very Strong, and in some stones strong fluorescence can give a slightly hazy look in daylight.
What Vucceli chose: no fluorescence. Your diamond looks the same in the showroom, in the sun and at dinner by candlelight.
Putting the 4Cs together
Think of the 4Cs as a balance, not a race to the top of every scale. Start with an excellent cut, then a colour and clarity that look perfectly white and clean, then the carat weight that suits your hand. That balance sits behind every Vucceli engagement ring, set in solid 18K gold and Proudly Crafted in Lebanon in our own workshop. For anyone choosing lab grown diamonds in Lebanon, it means one clear standard, whichever shape you love.
Frequently asked questions
Are the 4Cs the same for lab grown and natural diamonds?
Yes. Laboratories such as IGI and GIA grade both on the same cut, colour, clarity and carat scales. The report simply states that the stone is laboratory grown.
Can you see inclusions in a VVS2 diamond?
No. VVS2 inclusions need magnification even for a trained grader, so the diamond looks completely clean to the eye.
Which of the 4Cs matters most?
Cut, because it decides how much light the diamond returns. More answers are on our FAQ page.
