2. Trace or press one of her rings

If the ring cannot leave the house, place it on a sheet of paper and trace the inside of the circle with a sharp pencil, or press it gently into a bar of soap or a little modelling clay. Photograph the result next to a ruler. A jeweller can read the inner diameter from a clean tracing.

3. Ask a friend or family member

In Lebanon, someone always knows. A sister, her mother or her closest friend may already know her size, or can suggest trying on rings together while shopping. Choose someone who can keep the secret until the big day.

4. Measure while she sleeps

Wrap a thin strip of paper or a non-stretch thread around the base of her ring finger, mark where it meets and measure the length in millimetres. This gives the circumference, and conveniently the EU size is simply the inside circumference in millimetres. It is the least precise method, because fingers change through the day and thread can stretch, so treat the result as a guide.

5. Compare with your own fingers
